FIPHK members were treated to the sight of a Rainbow formation here in Hong Kong - not the monsoon variety, but in the form of a troupe of Odissi dancers!

It was colourful and joyful and the viewers were treated to a kaleidoscope of expressions and poses, through the graceful but powerful artistry of the dancers. The event certainly had everyone going Wow! at the end of the show.

The troupe was led by Ms Aruna Mohanty - one of the finest dancers of her generation. She is currently the secretary of the Orissa Dance Academy, and has won many awards including the Mahari Award 1997, Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial National Award 2001, Ministry of HRD Govt of India Fellowship etc. She and her troupe have travelled the world to great acclaim and her visit to HK was also a great success. The troupe of 10 accompanying dancers included 6 male and 4 female artists - which in itself is unique, as Odissi has traditionally been known as a bastion of the female art form.

The spectrum of dances began with an invocation to Goddess Durga followed by a demonstration of Navarasa abhinaya. Then the Konark temple came alive before our eyes as the stone sculptures were shown playing the various instruments depicted on its walls - a spell binding display of grace and mastery over intricate form. The piece de resistance though was the tragic ballad of the Tsunami which devastated the lives of thousands in Orissa and beyond - a masterpiece of pathos and emotion, which portrayed mankind in all its helplessness against the fury of Mother Nature.

FIPHK, SPIC MACAY and ICCR are privileged to co-host Rainbow - Expressions Through Odissi, an Odissi dance performance by Aruna Mohanty and her group on Sunday, July 4, 2010.

As a dance form, Odissi requires little introduction. One of India's oldest dance styles, this sublime school represents all that is graceful in traditional Indian culture, and originates in the state of Orissa in the 2nd Century BC.

Aruna Mohanty is an eminent danseuse representing the very highest levels of the Odissi dance style. She was initiated into this art at the tender age of 10 and over the years, has been nurtured in the traditional guru-shishya parampara to eventually become a leading practitioner who, in turn, has inspired others to turn to this style. While being renowned for her technical virtuosity, Aruna displays unique skills and versatility in depicting emotions, thereby excelling in the "Abhinaya" aspect of the dance. Aruna has performed extensively, both within India as well internationally.
